Ellen Pompeo is an American actress born in Everett, Massachusetts on November 10, 1969. She is Irish on her mother's side and Italian on her father's. Ellen Pompeo is a Catholic. Her grandfather was born in, Italy. Her mother, Kathleen died when she was four years old, and she was raised under the care of stepmother. Before becoming an actress Ellen Pompeo first served cocktails in a bar in Miami for two years, where she met then-boyfriend, Andrew Rosenthal, and it was not long after she started appearing on commercials and eventually minor roles on film and TV shows.

Driven by her passion for acting, Ellen Pompeo moved to Los Angeles in 2001. A turning point arrived when she was chosen by director Brad Silberling in 2002 for a role in the film Moonlight Mile as Jake Gyllenhaal's sympathetic love interest. She also took part in the film Daredevil playing Matt Murdock's (Ben Affleck) secretary Karen Page. In 2002 and 2003, Pompeo appeared in films such as Catch Me If You Can and Old School. Guest roles include two episodes of Law & Order and an episode of Friends. She as well portrayed Jim Carrey's ex-girlfriend, Naomi, in the 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Ellen Pompeo then stumbled on her first major role in the ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy, as the title character, Meredith Grey. It soon became the highest-rated show on network TV in its fourth season. In 2007, Pompeo was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Series. Also in that year, she signed a new contract for Grey's Anatomy that raised her salary to nearly $200,000 per episode.

On October 13, 2007, Ellen Pompeo was honored by the National Italian American Foundation for her accomplishments in the entertainment industry at a black-tie gala held in Washington, D.C.

Ellen Pompeo married record producer Chris Ivery on November 9, 2007 at New York's City Hall, with Mayor Michael Bloomberg as their witness. The two first met in 2003 when mutual friends introduced them at a Whole Foods Market, and started dating six months later. They later discovered that they both grew up in Boston just 10 miles away from each other. They now live in Los Angeles.
